I Screampt for my Ma
2024
Animation

Programs: Maya, Procreate, After Effects, and Premiere Pro.

Three women embrace the complicated relationships they have with their mothers while confronting ideals of maternal care.

From the start, I had a strong sense of what the film would be about. I new I had to delve deeper in my exploration of mother-daughter relationships. What does it mean to feel the increasing consideration of motherhood? How does one’s own relationship with their mother change how you feel about this certain stage of life? What do we carry over, and is there a choice in what we bring and what we leave behind? Who is she with you and who is she outside of you?

With these questions and more in mind, I sat down with a few of my close friends and peers individually and recorded our conversations. Familial relationships are naturally complex and sensitive mostly due to all kinds of close proximity, so I really wanted to take the time and make sure that they were comfortable to say what they truly felt.

Once the final speaking cut was complete, it became my backbone for production. After multiple visual drafts, I knew I had to mix medias and learned to work intuitively based on emotion. Much of the process was figuring things out through trial and error, similar to the narratives that unfolded from my interviewees.
Ultimately, the film reflects only a few individuals’ perspectives and experiences. In hearing their stories, I thought about my own relationship with my mother and in turn, I suppose that’s all it is -- a reflection and a safe space for us to share the more difficult and prickly parts of the receiving end of maternal love.
